Screening for Prostate Cancer
Last Updated: Thursday, 28 May 2026The prostate is a small gland found in men. It is located in the pelvis between the penis and the bladder. The main function of the prostate is to help in the production of semen. However, Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men and usually affects men over the age of 65.
Currently there is no national screening programme for prostate cancer, although a programme is being considered by the UK National Screening Committee.
A Prostate Specific Antigen PSA test is a blood test to help check for prostate conditions such as prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate. Although routine PSA testing is not offered on the NHS, you may be offered a PSA test if a doctor thinks you have symptoms that could be suggestive of prostate cancer.
It is important to be aware of the main symptoms to look out for.
