Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Last Updated: Tuesday, 20 August 2024Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that causes breathing difficulties. It includes:-
- Emphysema: Damage to the air sacs in the lungs
- Chronic bronchitis: long-term inflammation of the airways.
COPD is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke. Many people do not realise they have it. The breathing problems tend to get gradually worse over time and can limit your normal activities, although treatment can help keep the condition under control.

How we will help you manage your COPD
To help you manage your COPD, we will invite you to attend the surgery for an annual review. This is an opportunity to check that you are getting the best care you need and to stay healthy. It also gives you the opportunity to discuss any concerns that you might have regarding your health. You will be seen by one of our Practice Nurses who will support and advise you on how best to manage your COPD. Our Nurses can also signpost you to services that may be of benefit to you in managing your COPD, such as the Breathe programme. This is a 8-week rehabilitation programme for people in Liverpool who have long-term lung conditions such as COPD. There are 7 community venues across Liverpool and also a hospital-based venue.
